Triumph Spitfire 1500

The 1979 Triumph Spitfire 1500 represents the penultimate chapter of a classic British motoring icon. By this late stage in its production life, the Spitfire had evolved into a more "refined" cruiser compared to its raw ancestors, sporting chunky rubber overriders and a higher ride height to meet North American safety regulations. Under the bonnet sat a 1,493cc inline-four engine, which prioritized low-end torque over high-revving screams, making it a charming choice for scenic coastal drives rather than track days. Despite the era's growing competition, the '79 model retained its signature swing-axle rear suspension and that famous flip-top bonnet, offering enthusiasts unparalleled access to the engine and a pure, wind-in-your-hair experience that modern cars rarely replicate.
This car went up for auction on 4 February 2001 after John Clark passed away on 7 September 2000. This Triumph Spitfire has 8372 actual miles on it and, except for battery, is in total original factory condition. The hard top has never been removed from the car and the soft-top has never been raised. The Spitfire was purchased at the auction by a private party who has committed to placing this car in the British Museum of Transportation. It will be on loan to the Museum until such time as the Museum can fund the cost of the car
