Lotus Elan Series 4 FHC

Donated by: The Lane family of Dayton, OH
The 1972 Lotus Elan S4 Fixed Head Coupé (FHC) remains a pinnacle of Colin Chapman’s "simplify, then add lightness" philosophy, capturing the essence of a pure driver’s car during the sunset of the Elan's production. By 1972, the Series 4 had refined the revolutionary backbone chassis and fiberglass bodywork, weighing in at a featherlight 680 kg. Powered by the spirited 1,558cc Lotus-Ford Twin Cam engine, it delivered a punchy 105 to 118 horsepower depending on the tune, which, when paired with its telepathic rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel independent suspension, offered a level of agility that modern sports cars still struggle to emulate. The FHC variant provided a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette and a touch more structural rigidity than its soft-top sibling, making it a favorite for those who valued the Elan's giant-killing performance as much as its timeless, understated elegance.

This Lotus Elan Series 4 Fixed Head Coupe was donated to the Museum by the Lane family in partially restored condition. The restoration was started by Paul Lane, who unfortunately passed away before it's completion. After 4 years a dedicated group of museum volunteers were able to bring the Lanes' dream to reality.
